Junior rugby has returned at Wortley with all of our age grade teams experiencing some friendly but competetive action over the last 3 weeks. This week it was the turn of Rotherham Phoenix who joined us for a morning of rugby.
The under 14s played a spirited game, winning with 45 points to 15 sealed with tries from Hayden and Ryan and some excellent kicking from Jake and Ryan. The Warriors also put in an excellent defensive performance with some strong tackling and counter-rucking ensuring Rotherham rarely broke through the line. A win in their third game of the season was good preparation for next week's trip to Thorne in the first round of the Yorkshire Cup.
Our under 11s 'barbarian' side played their second game of the season. Rotherham were very well drilled, had some big lads and turned up with what was in effect two teams. We quickly realised we had to play clever. The game ebbed and flowed, and the Wortley boys would have a period of dominance before Rotherham were able to bring in the changes, refresh their line up and Wortley were forced to work twice as hard. We feared that tiredness would kick in and heads would drop, but the team showed great character and strong fitness levels to end the game with a flourish that belied the disparity in numbers. The coach and parents were proud of their show of grit and determination to come out of the test with their heads held high.
All teams displayed a great rugby ethos and we look forward to visiting them later in the season.
