The U8 Wortley Warriors travelled to Thorne today accompanied by some eager U7s.
The Wortley warriors used their blistering speed and devastating side steps to break through Thorne's defensive line and score on many occasions. Thorne retaliated with their own excellent runs and supportive play. The defence from both teams was admirable with tags taken galore. It's evident that the Wortley Warriors need to work on getting on side in defence to further progress and develop into the future champs they have the potential to be. Special mention of Sonny for his amazing tries, footwork and resilience in defence, and Sophie for lifting and motivating her team like a true leader.
Thorne were fantastic hosts, both teams demonstrated the RFU's values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. Thanks to Thorne for organising, refereeing and the post match hospitality.
Under 10s see off spirited Thorne side
Wortley RUFC u10’s played at Thorne in a good natured and competitive game. The first two quarters saw Wortley run away with the game. They played expansive rugby and recycled the ball well showing their new found understanding of rucking and mauling. They were able to keep the ball alive until gaps appeared and then profit from their play by scoring many tries without reply.
In the 3rd and 4th quarters Thorne found a way back into the game. While they were not as expansive as Wortley, they were stronger and more direct, smashing holes in the Wortley defense as the latter tired. Saying this the Wortley tackling has improved massively since Christmas and they were at times valiant in the way they tried to cope with some much heavier players.
If we were counting Wortley surely won, but this was a great development game for the team because they could all see how the expansive game gave them the upper hand and it was only tiredness that let the opposition recover somewhat. A proper test which revealed our strengths and shortfalls.
A big thanks to Thorne, they were fine hosts and provided a great sausage and chips meal for our boys. And a big thanks for the parents who traveled so far. I think everyone enjoyed the day and spirits were up by the end of the morning.
