Wortley claimed a convincing 36-15 victory over local rivals Stocksbridge in a highly competetive derby in Counties 4 Yorkshire South league at the weekend. The tie was also the first of a three-game series competing for the Fox Valley Trophy.
Wortley took control early on with full-back Iwan Orr dancing through the Stocksbridge defence to score the opening try. Wortley scored a second try to take the tie to 1-0 before Stocksbridge responded just before the break to make it 10-5 going into half time.
Wortley pulled ahead in the second half with two quick tries, both converted by Luke Jagger, leaving Stocksbridge struggling to keep up the pace. Whilst Stocksbridge showed signs of a resurgence from a well-worked line-out, poor defending again led to Wortley extending their lead with eventual man of the match, Iwan Orr running in two more tries.
The game eventually finished 36-15. The next clash in the trilogy is scheduled for November.
Try scorers: Iwan Orr (3), Brad Healey, George Peacock, Luke Jagger.
Conversions: Luke Jagger (3)
